Rail Cargo Service Restarts on Upgraded Szeged-Röszke Line
Rail cargo service between Szeged (163 km southeast of Budapest) and Röszke (164 km southeast), on Hungary's border with Serbia, was restarted on Monday, after a 30-year hiatus, according to a report by state news wire MTI.
State Secretary for Transport Dávid Vitézy said the Sezged-Röszke rail line was upgraded at a fiscal cost of over HUF 40 billion.
The completion paves the way for the start of the reconstruction of the entire Hungarian stretch of the Budapest-Belgrade rail line, he added.
The Budapest-Belgrade rail line is expected to become part of a corridor for bringing Chinese goods to Europe on a route running through the Port of Piraeus in Greece.
The cornerstone of the rail line was laid last October.
