Great Plain Could Dry out by Century's End

Weather

Hungary is threatened with dehydration in the coming decades if climate change is not stopped, researchers from Eötvös Loránd University wrote in their study published on masfelfok.hu.

The experts predict the spread of dry areas due to the increasingly strong climate change, primarily in the northern and central parts of the Great Plain, the Little Plain, and the northeastern part of Transdanubia.

The process has been going on for decades. Compared to the 1970s and 1980s, the proportion of wet areas has already decreased from 84% to 68%.

The publication outlines several possibilities. According to the most unfavorable forecast, by the end of the century, the Great Plain may be completely dry, and only the western part of the country will remain wetter.
